Built in Malta, for Maltese yards

Scrap yard software made for how Malta actually buys

Euro pricing, kilo weights, 18% VAT and WEEE categories out of the box — not a foreign system you have to bend into shape. SPiS replaced a desktop application in a working Maltese yard, and grew from there.

Why local matters more than it should

Most scrap yard software on the market is built for North American operations: it prices in dollars, weighs in pounds, has no concept of VAT, and models compliance around state-level identification rules that have nothing to do with a Maltese permit. Yards here end up either paying for a system they fight with, or staying on paper.

SPiS started at the other end. It was written to replace a desktop purchase system in a Maltese yard that had run for years on a local database, Excel print templates and a shared password — with all the reconciliation, race conditions and lost history that implies. The rebuild kept what the yard actually relied on and fixed what it had been working around.

The result is a system where the defaults are already right: euro, kilos, VAT at 18%, metal and WEEE as distinct material kinds, and documents that look like the remittance notes sellers here expect.

The compliance picture in 2026

Two things changed the record-keeping burden for Maltese operators this year. Waste shipment procedures moved to electronic submission under Regulation (EU) 2024/1157 from 21 May 2026, with ERA publishing guidance for local operators on the Digital Waste Shipment System. And the export restrictions in the same regulation tighten again in May 2027.

Neither is a reason to buy software by itself. But both assume something a lot of yards do not yet have: accurate, coded, per-transaction records that can be produced on demand rather than assembled from a drawer.

Frequently asked questions

Is SPiS suitable for a Maltese scrap yard?
Yes — it was built for one. SPiS started as a replacement for a desktop system running in a Maltese yard, so euro pricing, kilo weights, 18% VAT and WEEE categories are defaults rather than configuration work. The interface is in English.
Does it handle the 18% VAT rate correctly?
Yes. VAT is applied per purchase and configurable per operator, with the rate reflected in totals, remittance documents and reports. Purchases that fall outside VAT are handled without a workaround.
Will it help with ERA permit record-keeping?
SPiS gives you a complete, timestamped, per-transaction record of everything bought — material, weight, price, seller identity and payment — with an audit trail of any correction, and reporting over any date range. That is the evidence base ERA record-keeping obligations rest on, though your permit conditions are ultimately between you and the Authority.
What about DIWASS and the new EU waste shipment rules?
Waste shipment procedures have had to be carried out electronically since 21 May 2026 under Regulation (EU) 2024/1157, and ERA has published guidance for Maltese operators. SPiS does not submit to DIWASS on your behalf, but it gives you the clean, coded, per-transaction source records that a digital submission depends on.
Where is our data stored?
In the EU. Purchase records contain personal data such as ID card and vehicle numbers, so EU hosting, role-based access and GDPR export and erasure were designed in from the start rather than added later.
